The HPV vaccine (Human Papillomavirus Vaccine), also known as the cervical cancer vaccine, is a preventive vaccine that protects against cervical cancer and other diseases caused by HPV infection. Currently in Hong Kong, three types of HPV vaccines are available: 9-valent, 4-valent, and 2-valent.

So, how effective are they? Are there any side effects? What does the vaccination schedule look like? How do prices and offers for the 9-valent vaccine differ across providers?

Who Should Get the HPV Vaccine?

Recommended Age for HPV Vaccination

The HPV vaccine is recommended for individuals aged 9 and above.

Since HPV is mainly transmitted through sexual contact, both males and females are advised to get vaccinated before becoming sexually active or before any potential HPV exposure. Doing so significantly increases the vaccine’s protective effect—especially in preventing cervical and other HPV-related cancers.

Is It Necessary for Young Girls to Get the HPV Vaccine Early?

Yes. Girls aged 9 or older can start receiving the HPV vaccine.

Clinical studies have shown that the earlier the vaccine is administered, the higher the antibody levels produced by the body. Vaccinating before sexual activity provides the strongest protection.

The HPV vaccine has undergone extensive clinical trials and has been proven safe, with no impact on development or menstruation, so parents need not worry.

I’m Sexually Active or May Have HPV. Is Vaccination Still Worth It?

Yes. Even for individuals who have had sexual intercourse, given birth, or may already have an HPV infection, HPV vaccination is still recommended.

While the vaccine cannot treat an existing HPV infection, it can:

Protect against other HPV types covered by the vaccine

Is the HPV Vaccine Safe for Pregnant Women?

HPV vaccination is not recommended for pregnant women or those planning to conceive.

If a woman becomes pregnant during her vaccination course, she should pause further doses and consult her doctor. After delivery, she can resume the vaccination. The safety of the vaccine during pregnancy and its effects on the fetus should be closely monitored with regular check-ups.
